Technicians replacing or troubleshooting Alliance Laundry Systems controls need to treat the machine ID chip as part of the machine, not the control. This tech tip covers the ID chip and control interface on Alliance dryers, frontload and topload washers, stack washer/dryers, and hardmount washer-extractors. A replacement control is not shipped with an ID chip and has no configuration.
Manufacturer(s)
Alliance Laundry Systems (Speed Queen, Huebsch, and other Alliance family brands).
Appliance Type(s)
Single and stack small dryers, single and stack tumble dryers, frontload washers, topload washers, stack washer/dryers, cabinet hardmount washer-extractors, and pocket hardmount washer-extractors that use a machine ID chip with the control.
Model(s) Included
Alliance machines of the product types above that store model number, serial number, configuration, global programming, and audit data on the ID chip. Confirm the exact model and serial on the cabinet rating plate before ordering a replacement ID chip or control. The chip must match control family (Quantum vs. Midas), machine type, and brand feature-set (Speed Queen vs. Huebsch).
When a new ID chip is required, order part 203361P and give Alliance the machine model and serial number.
Symptom(s)
The machine may display an ID-chip / configuration error, refuse to run after a control swap, or lose configuration and audit data. Typical codes:
- En31 — wrong control type. Example: a Midas ID chip on a Quantum control, or an incorrect chip on an un-configured control.
- En32 — wrong machine type. Example: a dryer ID chip installed on a topload washer.
- En33 — feature-set mismatch. Example: a Speed Queen ID chip placed on a Huebsch control.
- En39 — control is not configured and the attached ID chip is also not configured.
- EnFF — control is not configured and there is no ID chip on the control.
A configured control with no ID chip installed will show a non-fatal error but will still run the machine. Hot-swapping a control or chip with power applied can corrupt the chip, the control, or both and may leave the machine inoperable.
Possible Cause(s)
The ID chip stayed with the old control instead of the machine. A replacement control has no configuration until it reads the original chip. Other common causes:
- Changing a control or ID chip with power applied (hot-swap). This corrupts data on the chip, the control, or both.
- Wrong ID chip type for the control family, machine type, or brand feature-set.
- Swapping chips or controls between machines that are not the same model number.
- Ordering a chip or control without providing the correct model and serial number.
Diagnostic Procedure
- Disconnect power. Alliance requires a complete power-down before changing a control, an ID chip, or both. Do not hot-swap.
- Record model and serial from the cabinet rating plate. You will need both if a replacement ID chip (203361P) or control is ordered.
- Locate the ID chip. It is a small molded module on a short harness at the control (Figure 1, MIX23B). The chip stays with the machine it was originally installed in.
- To tell if a control is already configured, power up the machine with the ID chip disconnected.
- Blank display with EnFF — control is not configured.
- Powers up as if the chip were connected — control is already configured.
- Match any En31 / En32 / En33 / En39 / EnFF code to a chip-to-control mismatch before replacing parts. Do not keep swapping chips to “see what happens.”
- If a swap is used for troubleshooting, both machines must be the same model number or the swap will error and will not give useful data. Alliance does not encourage swapping chips or controls between machines because current audit data can be lost.
- When a replacement control is installed, connect the original machine ID chip while the unit is still powered down. On first power-up the control reads configuration from the chip. While the machine is powered, the control talks to the chip every minute, updates it twice per day, and updates it any time programming is changed.

Recommended Repair
Power the machine down completely. Move the original ID chip from the old control to the new control. Do not order or install a different chip unless the original is damaged or the wrong type. A new control is not shipped with an ID chip and has no configuration until it reads the machine chip.
If keeping the current audit data does not matter, order a new control and a new ID chip together. If a replacement chip is required, order 203361P and supply the correct model and serial number so Alliance configures the chip for that machine.
Do not hot-swap. Do not mix Quantum and Midas chips and controls. Do not put a dryer chip on a washer, or a Speed Queen chip on a Huebsch control. After the original chip is on the new control, restore power and confirm the machine configuration comes up without En31, En32, En33, En39, or EnFF.
